Concerta and Food

My kid uses Concerta during the day. The medication affects her appetite a lunch time. At school, we find out, she's been tossing her sandwich in the trash and just eating a snack (like pretzels) at snack time. She will drink juice only at actual lunch time. On weekends, it ends up being a bit of a challenge getting her to eat. Lunch-time can end up taking two or more hours to just get a tiny bit of food into her.

Hi
My soon to be 8 year old son was on Concerta and we had the same issues with food. I agree with Matthews comment of food at breakfast and dinner. It did settle down a little after a while. I think it was also a control thing with him too. I stuck to the rule of if he ate at least half his meal he could have a dessert, this works quite well. Unless your son starts losing weight I wouldn't worry too much. Recently had to change his meds as he "overrode" the Concerta and is now on Strattera. THis tablet seems to work slightly differently and he is eating a bit more.

I'm not sure that there is much you can do about lunch-time. Concerta (like all the stimulants for ADHD) repress appetite. The best you are likely to manage is loading up on calories in the morning, before the medicine has kicked in and in the evening, after the medicine has worn off.
