consequences
Oh, my God. You would not believe how well yesterday went after school. The rule after school is do homework first everything else comes second. Usually with J its a knock down drag out fight to get this accomplished. He knows if he doesn't do homework the consequence is he has to sit on his bed and do nothing untill bedtime (7:30.) I know that seems pretty harsh but thats what has been agreed upon in therapy. Therapist kept saying no matter how much he screams and yells and is disrespectful as long as he does his homework its done. Then he gets a homework treat. He has NEVER had the consequence. Well yesterday I was determined that he was going to follow the rules about homework. He came home and I told him once and once only it was time to do homework. He started screaming and being disrespectful as usual, I just picked the homework up put it away and didn't say another word to him. He went and sat on his bed without being told and he sat there untill dinner time. He wasn't having a meltdown or anything. He was crying and talking to himself about his actions. I heard him say to himself that AuntDebbie was mad at me for being disrespectful and he has to stop being mean to me. After dinner we sat and talked about his behavior and I told him that I wasn't going to let him be disrespectful to me anymore and that whenever he was it hurt my feelings. He started crying and said he was sorry. It was such a wonderful evening and such a dramatic change.

Sounds like a little breakthrough. That is terrific!
That is such good news. I know the last few months have been really difficult for you. RAD is an extraordinarily difficult disorder to work through because the kid can seem so charming, friendly, and easy-going to everybody but the ones closest to him or her.
OH,MY GOD what a wonderful afternoon. My son gets home from school at 2:50 pm. He came in and went straight through to to table to do homework. He even did last nights homework without being disrespectful. He was done with 5 pages of homework within 20 minutes. I was so impressed with him. He was so proud of himself, he got all his prevledges back, even the game boy and he is still using his manners. We haven't screamed or yelled at each other in over 24 hours. HOORAY, HOORAY.
Congratulations!
